Guest post – Natalia of Marmag Creation

Fall is my favorite season of the year. The trees turn into different colors, the weather is perfect…not too warm and not too cold. It’s the perfect season to start layering items without having to sacrifice style or comfort.

I started building a capsule wardrobe around December last year and have not regretted every step I’ve made since. A capsule wardrobe is a small selection of items that don’t go out of  fashion. This means that instead of having a wardrobe of around 100 or more items (that every average woman has) you will build a sustainable wardrobe based on 50 or less items that are wearable all year long.

An example of a fall/spring capsule wardrobe

I have a wardrobe that is based on my lifestyle and that I can wear in multiple seasons. For example, since I live in Michigan and we have cold weather for over 6 months my fall capsule wardrobe is also wearable during spring. That’s why I built it with a mixture of pastel colors and layering items. All of my items are wearable with each other, my tops go with my bottoms as well as my shoes. This way I don’t have to worry about what to wear every morning because I have proven outfit combinations with every item in my capsule.

Why You Should Start a Capsule Wardrobe

I think everyone should start a capsule wardrobe because it will make the world a better place by having more thoughtful consumers. I strongly believe that the most sustainable wardrobe is the one we already have. That’s why we must learn to love our clothes, and re-wear them as much as we can. Have you ever regretted buying something because you feel you just don’t love it, or won’t wear it as often as you thought? This is exactly the point in creating a wardrobe that you will love. It will help you to:

  1. Find joy in what you wear everyday
  2. Rewear each item in your wardrobe more than 5 times (average wears of fast fashion items)
  3. Become more creative with your styling
  4. Become a conscious consumer spending less money on clothes

And with all that said let’s dive into my recommendations to start an ethical capsule wardrobe for this fall.

1. A Basic Wool Sweater

I like adding wool sweaters to my wardrobe for many reasons but the most important one is apart from keeping you warm it is 100% better to invest in natural fabrics over synthetic fabrics. (Read this post for more detail on the difference between natural and synthetic fibers.) I like to choose neutral colors as well as pastels to mix up my outfits. During fall my favorite colors are orange, brown and burgundy because they somewhat define the season.

I personally love Everlane for the basic wool.

2. The Classic Ankle Boots

For me ankle boots are a staple in any minimalist wardrobe because they elevate any look and are comfortable to wear but at the same time very stylish. I would recommend Nisolo for finding the perfect ankle boots. Nisolo uses upcycled materials as well as byproduct of the meat industry for their leather shoes so they are a great option to invest in.

3. The Stylish Leather Jacket

I like to use my leather jacket during fall to layer over my sweaters. Jackets are perfect for adding a rocker-ish vibe to your outfits, and they are great for using over dresses too!

4. The Must Have Black Skinny Jeans

Again I reference Everlane here for ethical denim! I have a complete review post on why their denim is the best option for a capsule wardrobe. (Read my review here) But long story short their factory recycles 98% of the water they use to create denim. Standard factories waste tons of water in washing their denim to create that mid-wash or light-wash colors in your jeans, but at their factory they even air dry their jeans. I love wearing Everlane denim and love using the color black as a must in my fall capsule.

5. Loafers and Mules

I cannot obsess enough about loafers during fall! I absolutely love how they make an outfit more edgy. Loafers are my substitutes for sneakers. They are comfortable and stylish at the same time. If you have them in pastel or neutral colors it is a plus because they will blend in nicely with the rest of your fall capsule.

These are my favorite choice of shoe colors for loafers and mules.

Bonus… A wool or alpaca sweater vest

If you like doing layers during fall check out my handmade reversible alpaca vests. They are perfect for layering over sweaters to keep you warm, or to wear them on both sides.

Literally Simple - Minimalism for Women

Hope you enjoyed this guest post by Natalia from Marmag Creation. I love reading examples of people who have simplified their closets in promotion of more sustainable fashion, but also simply because it makes life easier. As I read this post, I found myself patting myself on the back because I have in the last two years selectively chosen a Fall capsule wardrobe with these basics. I love my quality leather brown booties, black skinny jeans, and my classic leather jacket. I wear them often, and all were bought second hand, at a much higher quality than a department store.

If you haven’t committed to a capsule wardrobe, this Fall is your time! I just recently read Natalia’s e-book on how to create a capsule wardrobe and found it to be the most insightful piece I’ve read thus far on my minimalism in fashion journey. Honestly, if you can focus your style, only choose basics, and simplify your wardrobe you’ll save time and money in the long run. I’m definitely one of those women with way too many clothes in my closet! Building a wardrobe capsule seems like a great idea and very economical!

Love all of the styles! I wish I was brave enough to do a capsule wardrobe but don’t think I can do it!

I’ve recently simplified my wardrobe and I love it. It’s amazing how many outfits you can create from a few core pieces. It doesn’t get too cold where I’m living so I’m still going to be wearing shorts and dresses through October. Maybe by November I’ll be ready for more traditional fall attire. I love the alpaca vest!
