A Literally Simple Green Smoothie
The Only Green Smoothie Recipe You’ll Ever Need
We’re all about simplicity this summer, and what could be easier than a green smoothie recipe you know by heart? This smoothie will come in handy, especially when you’re craving a chocolate Frosty from Wendy’s. This recipe packs in greens, fruit, protein and fiber, plus it tastes delicious and promotes that summer glow we wrote about in July.
Ingredients:
1/3 c. Almond milk
1 scoop Protein powder
1/2 tbsp. Cocoa (optional)
1-2 Frozen bananas already cut
1/2 tbsp. Peanut Butter (optional)
1-2 handfuls fresh spinach
Honestly, the measurements for the ingredients are up to your own tastes. When I want a vanilla tasting smoothie I leave out the cocoa, or if I don’t want the added fat I skip the peanut butter. You can also make this smoothie without milk and substitute water, but the milk thickens and adds flavor. If you don’t have protein powder you can also skip this as well. Fresh kale from your garden can substitute for spinach. There are many variations.
One preparation you’ll want to do ahead of time is to cut up the bananas and freeze. I cut up the super ripe bananas that might go bad in a few days as these are the sweetest, and then I throw them in a container and stick them in the freezer. This way the pieces are ready whenever I feel like making a smoothie. Depending on how sweet, or thick you want your smoothie to be, you can add or subtract banana pieces.
A Simple Green Smoothie
Green Smoothie Directions:
- The night before cut up and freeze bananas.
- The morning of pour in almond milk into blender cup.
- Add in a scoop of protein powder.
- Add Cocoa powder (optional).
- Dump the pre-cut and frozen bananas.
- Add peanut butter.
- Add spinach.
- Blend! I make this in a smoothie cup with the Ninja blender, so the order helps to make the blending easier when you flip the cup over to blend. If not using a smoothie cup, you want the liquid to flow down to the bottom, and the easier stuff to blend like spinach and peanut butter closer to the blades.
- Enjoy! I love to pour it into a mason jar and drink with a reusable straw.

I’m definitely going to try this smoothie. Looks so yum!
Awesome Gen! It’s seriously so good. I love the chocolate peanut butter version on a hot day. 🙂
This looks so tasty! I feel like spinach and bananas are the main ingredient in a majority of these types of smoothies, not that I am complaining 🙂
Hi Allyson,
Agreed – bananas add the sweetness, and the spinach flavor is easily hidden. 🙂
I love how few ingredients there are in this recipe, it makes it so anyone can enjoy it!
Exactly! Super simple!
I’ve never thought of mixing browns on my green smoothie because it changes the color. How do you keep it green?
Hi Paige,
Yes, if you add the cocoa your smoothie will change colors. However, I still deem it “green” because of all the spinach. 🙂
Such a great and simple smoothie recipe ! And super healthy !
I love green smoothies, but you add some interesting protein rich ingredients that I would normally skip. Going to try this recipe this weekend! Thank you for sharing.
Hey Margaret! Yes, give it a shot!
