10 Quotes to Inspire Relaxation and Rest
1.) Lori Deschene is the founder of Tiny Buddha. Tiny Buddha is about reflecting on simple wisdom and learning new ways to apply it to our complex lives. Her site features stories, tips, and insights from readers of all ages, from all over the globe.
2.) Thick Nhat Hanh is a Vietnamese Buddhist monk, global spiritual leader, poet, author and peace activist. He is the man Martin Luther King called “An Apostle of peace and nonviolence”. At 92 years old, he is still teaching us how to live in the present moment.
3.) Brene Brown has spent her career studying courage, vulnerability, shame, and empathy and is the author of five #1 New York Times best sellers: The Gifts of Imperfection, Daring Greatly, Rising Strong, Braving the Wilderness, and her latest book, Dare to Lead. She has been one of my greatest teachers.
4.) What is it about ‘ol Pooh Bear that we all love and adore? I’ll tell ya what: he takes pleasure in the simple things in life, he is always positive, he has the ultimate #squadgoals, and he is loyal, kind and grateful. Oh ya, and he loves eating honey. What’s not to love?
5.) Arianna Huffington is the founder of The Huffington Post, the founder and CEO of Thrive Global, and the author of fifteen books. Instead of bragging about our sleep deficits, she urges us to shut our eyes and see the big picture: We can sleep our way to increased productivity and happiness- and smarter decision-making.
6.) Eleanor Brownn is a public speaker and educator who is on a mission to help women be kinder to themselves. She says, “Too often, we do not make time for sufficient self care because we’re too busy taking care of others.” Seriously, what busy mom can’t relate to that?
7.) Eddie Cantor was an American “illustrated song” performer, comedian, dancer, singer, actor, and songwriter. This quote of his really stuck with me. When I am going through life too fast, I find that I tend to veer off course. As I slow down and relax, my purpose seems to align with my journey.
8.) This Chinese proverb hits home for me. In the past I have struggled with always feeling the need to “do something”. However, lately I have learned to slow down and relax when I feel myself becoming anxious and tense. If you want help slowing down and gaining quality in your life, read this really great article HERE on habits for a long, quality life.
9.) Sydney Harris was an American journalist for the Chicago Daily News and, later, the Chicago Sun-Times. I love this quote of his because it speaks to the older version of me. I used to only stop to relax, meditate or go for a walk when I was finally at the breaking point. Now, I have learned that everyday I must take time for myself or I will not be successful as a mother, wife, nurse or writer.
10.) Oh Anne Lamott… I swear she is one of my many spirit animals. For those of you who don’t know her, she is an American novelist and non-fiction writer. She is also a progressive political activist, public speaker, and writing teacher. She is also the lady who coined the phrase, “Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes, including you.”
Final Words
Please know that I am not perfect and even as we speak I am up late at night while my kids sleep, writing this article. I should be resting and I know this because I can feel myself getting tired. Yet, it is a balance. Next week my husband and I are celebrating 10 years of marriage and will be going away (without kids!) for a much needed vacation. I know that I will be unplugged and relaxing for that time, so I am preparing.
There is nothing wrong with putting in the work to build up your dreams and passions. Just promise me you will take at least one part of your day for some R & R. Wishing you a relaxing end of your summer from one busy friend to another. 😉
